TOPIC: Digital Security and privacy for citizens and Small and Medium Enterprises and Micro Enterprises

Types of action: IA Innovation action

This topic aims to protect freedom, security and privacy by ensuring personal data protection of the citizens in Europe and avoiding personal data breach that may facilitate abuse by third parties. There is a need for increased citizens’ capacity to modulate the level and accuracy of the monitoring tools involved in their digital activities and configure their own security, privacy and personal data protection settings and controls across these services.

SMEs and MEs (Micro Enterprises) are more vulnerable to cyber-attacks and an easy target because the can only allocate limited technical and human resources. However, they have a significant economic role in the EU, so the research to innovation should support them in a complex and fast-evolving field.

Sub-topic 1: Protecting citizens’ security, privacy and personal data

This sub-topic has an expected funding amount between EUR 4 and 5 million per project and is expected to lead to development up to Technology Readiness level (TRL) 7.

Innovative solutions to personal data protection, develop new applications and technologies in order to help citizens to better monitor and audit their security, privacy and personal data protection. Proposals should include new solutions to improve the privacy and personal data protection risks, allowing users to manage their privacy level at any moment and their right to erasure, and removing and reporting potential harmful content and abusive interactions.

Sub-topic 2: Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and Micro Enterprises (SMEs&MEs): defenders of security, privacy and personal data protection

This sub-topic has an expected funding amount between EUR 3 and 4 million per project and is expected to lead to development up to Technology Readiness level (TRL) 7.
