HORIZON 2020 aims to place the EU in a prominent position internationally to attract talent, allow scientific collaboration within the Union and improve its citizens’ quality of life. Within this goal, we frame the Knowledge Frontier Research programme funded by the European Research Council (ERC) or funding for Future and Emerging Technologies.
HORIZON 2020 promotes industrial leadership and investment in strategic technologies with great potential in all sectors, through key enabling technologies, promoting revolutionary changes through advanced manufacturing, new materials or information and communication technologies (ICT).
Challenges of society
Horizon 2020 emerges as a challenge to improve the lives of citizens. This is achieved by boosting research and innovation in the areas of health, food safety, clean energy, intelligent and ecological transport, climate and environmental protection, and changes towards a safe and inclusive European society.
How does it work?
HORIZON 2020 is an open programme, with simplified rules and procedures, in which consortiums consisting of three legal persons, belonging to a Member State of the EU or an associated country, can participate mainly through Standard research projects.
Other specific programmes are also offered, among which the SME-Instrument specific to SMEs is noteworthy.
The main activities that can be carried out under this programme are:
Research and innovation actions capable of generating new knowledge or technologies.
Innovative actions for projects involving market-related activities.
Coordination and support actions
What budget does it cover?
The European funding of the HORIZON 2020 programme covers 70% of the costs eligible for innovation actions, and can reach 100% for non-profit organizations. Likewise, 25% of the eligible indirect costs such as administration or communication will be reimbursed.
Those projects which require financing in a sum equal to or greater than €500,000 will be subject to a financial viability and audit control by the European Commission.
